How Roofline Measurement Works.

What counts as roofline, why corners and gables change the number, and how close your own estimate needs to be before anyone gets on a ladder.

Every roofline lighting plan starts with one number: how many linear feet of edge the house actually has. It sounds like a tape- measure question, and eventually it is — but for planning, you can get a genuinely useful figure standing on your own driveway. This guide explains what counts, what adds up faster than people expect, and where the estimate stops and the real measurement begins.

What counts as roofline

For lighting purposes, roofline means the edges a strand can trace: eaves along the front and sides, the sloped edges of gables, the ridge lines of dormers, and the trim over a garage. It does not mean the whole roof surface — lighting follows lines. A useful mental model is to stand across the street at dusk and imagine drawing the house with one continuous stroke: the edges you would draw are the edges that get measured.

Walking the footprint

The ground-level shortcut works because most roof edges sit directly above walls. Pace the front of the house, the sides if they will be lit, and any wing or garage that projects forward. An average adult pace is close to three feet, so a front that takes ten paces is on the order of thirty feet of first-floor eave. Write the runs down separately — front, left, right, garage — because separate runs is exactly how a design treats them.

Where the number grows: corners, gables, stories

Three things push the real figure past the paced one. Corners add length whenever the line turns — an L-shaped front is longer than the same width in a straight run. Gables add both sloped edges, and a steep pitch adds more than a shallow one over the same width. And a second story adds its own roofline above the first: on many two-story homes the upper runs carry as much footage as the lower ones. This is why the confident version of the number comes from the facade, never from square footage.

From footage to bulbs

Once a footage exists, the arithmetic is fixed: our default is warm white C9 bulbs at 15-inch spacing, so the count is the footage in inches divided by fifteen. Where the estimate ends

The design visit is where measurement becomes real: the actual roofline, the corners, power access, and how much coverage the property calls for, confirmed at the house. That planning step is its own stage of every installation, done before anyone is on a ladder. Your paced estimate's job is only to start that conversation with a shared sense of scale — and for that, close is plenty.

Frequently asked questions

Do I measure the roof or the ground?

The ground, for an estimate. Walking the footprint below the roof edge gets close enough for planning, since most roofline runs sit directly above a wall you can pace off. The real measurement happens against the house itself.

Do gables and second stories count extra?

Yes. A gable adds its two sloped edges, and a second-story roofline is its own run on top of the first-floor line below it. That is why two homes with the same footprint can need very different amounts of lighting.

How exact does my number need to be before I reach out?

It does not. A rough figure is enough to start the conversation — the design visit confirms the real roofline, corners and coverage before anything is ordered or installed.
